How Did You Select Your Religion?

There are a great many Pagan religions -- and lots more non-Pagan religions. How did you select your religion? Was it a rational process or more of an intuitive process? Was it even a process at all? Looking back at it, do you think your process worked well? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

Holidays/Festivals which are Difficult for You

I celebrate the wheel of the year, but there are some spikes of it that don't go as easy as other ones. Samhain for example is something I have quite an issue with because I find it hard to connect to my ancestors as I've broken contact with my family. (There was a good thread here addressing this issue: http://www.ecauldron.net/forum/index.php?topic=9254.0)

Is there any holiday/festival on your path you feel uneasy about? (I'm not just interested in those of the 'wheel', but of this issue in general.)

How do you go about your difficult holiday/festival?

Magical Healing for Pets?

I know you aren't supposed to do healing on anyone with their permission, but what about pets?

Would you have to ask their permission as well and try to determine the response? Or should you just never do it?

I'm taking slow steps towards doing some healing work with my oldest of three dogs until I can get her to the doctor.

I'm just curious what others' opinions are on doing healing work for pets and, really, any loved ones who aren't capable of letting you know whether they want you to or not (i.e., coma patients, people undergoing emergency surgery, etc.).

Teens and Paganism FAQ Available for Download

Wiccan NecklaceImage by Special via Flickr

A number of Cauldron members have been working on a Teens and Paganism FAQ for over a year now. The first version of this FAQ is now available for download as a 50+ page PDF file suitable for reading or printing. Don't let the "Teens" in the title put you off. if you are new to Pagan religions, you will find a lot of interesting material on Pagan religions in this file that will be helpful to someone new to Pagan religions regardless of their age. If you are a teen, there are special sections aimed directly at your needs.

I'd like to thank everyone who has worked on this FAQ. It's really very good and everyone involved should be proud of the results. You can find out more about this FAQ and download a copy here:

Want to learn and experience more about Mabon/Autumn equinox

I'm very new to the Pagan Holidays and how people celebrate. From what I hear the Autumnal Equinox is like a "witches Thanksgiving". Perhaps a bold question but, would anyone mind sharing that with me? I would love to make a dish and maybe a few of us in the area could get together and have a meal? I'm in Austin, Texas but don't mind driving a few hours. Just thought I would throw it out there.

Samhain Party Cooking Ideas Needed

Halloween CostumesImage by Transguyjay via Flickr

I am having an 'all out' 18th Century fancy dress party for Samhain this year, which also includes celebrating 3 birthdays. I am trying to get as many 'cheesy' food ideas as possible i.e. amputated finger shaped biscuits, swamp punch with lychee eyeballs etc. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Responsibilities from your religious path?

What responsibilities do you have that have come from the religion/religious path that you follow?

For example, a responsibility could be something your deity has specifically asked you to do, such as giving an offering at certain times. It could also be something that your religion dictates is the 'right' thing to do, such as treating those around with you with respect. Or it could be something that you yourself feel is your responsibility, but it has been inspired by the religious path you follow.

What do you feel is your primary responsibility?
Do some responsibilities hold more weight than others? If so, which?

Have any of these responsibilities ever impacted upon or conflicted with your daily life?

I ask this question because, having been very busy these past few weeks, I have had little time for religious pursuits. Consequently, I have had to prioritize the responsibilities of my path because my time has been so limited.

Books by Sandra Kynes?

Has anyone read one of hers?

I'm considering 'Sea Magick' to get some nice ideas, though the book looks like it could be somewhat fluffy. I'm pondering it to use as a source for ideas on meditation, crafty things, little stuff... as long as there's no gross misinformation. Anyone read that or any other book of hers?

All about Altars and Shrines

Three types of home censer. Left: plate for st...Image via Wikipedia

We haven't had a discussion on this topic for quite a while and I think it's about time we did.

Many of us here at TC have an altar and/or shrine. Some even have multiple ones. For those of you who do, here are a few questions:

First off, do you make any distinction between an altar and a shrine? If so, why?

Do you have more than one? If so is it because they serve different purposes or dedicated to different deities?

What do they look like? Do the individual things on them serve a specific purpose? (for example, if you have more than one offering dish, incense burner, etc., why more than one?)

Is it for strictly devotional use, strictly magical/divinatory or a little bit of both?

If you had more money to go to it, what would the altar of your dreams look like?

Getting connected to Poseidon?

I'd like to get connected to Poseidon because I feel somewhat drawn to him, but I don't really know where to start.

I'm not living near the sea (I did a year ago), nor do I have any aquatic connection in my life at the moment whatsoever. I'm not sure what I really want from him, I just feel drawn there and that feeling I have for quite a while now.

I'm still a bit insecure about how to start a relationship with a deity. I've only started one relationship with a deity so far and that wasn't well planned.

Does anyone work with him (reconstructionist, witchy or otherwise)? Do you live by the sea or have any other aquatic connections?

Can anyone give suggestions to me on how to start?
